The Mg–K Anticorrelation in ω Centauri

چکیده

We present [K/Fe] abundance ratios for a sample of 450 stars in Omega Centauri, using high resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES@VLT. Abundances Fe, Na and Mg were also derived. detected intrinsic K variations analysed stars. Moreover, shows significant correlation [Na/Fe] anti-correlation [Mg/Fe]. The presence clear-cut Mg-K makes Centauri third stellar system, after NGC 2419 2808, hosting sub-population [Mg/Fe]<0.0 dex, K-enriched case by ~0.3 dex respect to Mg-rich ([Mg/Fe]>0.0 dex). correlation/anti-correlation between other light elements involved chemical anomalies supports idea that spread can be associated same self-enrichment process typical globular clusters. suggest abundances perhaps found most massive and/or metal-poor clusters as manifestation an extreme process. Theoretical models face problems explain production Indeed, where asymptotic giant branch are responsible only qualitatively agree observations. Finally, we discovered peculiar star extraordinary overabundance ([K/Fe]=+1.60 dex) similar this K-rich could formed from pure ejecta AGB before dilution pristine material.

The Stellar Dynamics of ω Centauri

The stellar dynamics of ω Centauri are inferred from the radial velocities of 469 stars measured with CORAVEL (Mayor et al. 1997). Rather than fit the data to a family of models, we generate estimates of all dynamical functions nonparametrically, by direct operation on the data. The cluster is assumed to be oblate and edge-on but mass is not assumed to follow light. The mean motions are consist...

The Evolution of Copper in the Globular Cluster Ω Centauri

Copper abundances are presented for 40 red-giant members of the massive Galactic globular cluster ω Centauri, as well as 15 red-giant members of the globular clusters NGC288, NGC362, NGC3201, NGC6752, and M4 (NGC6121). The spectra are of relatively high spectral-resolution and signal-to-noise. Using these abundances, plus published literature values for field stars, the abundance trends of [Cu/...

Contrasting copper evolution in ω Centauri and the Milky Way

Despite the many studies on stellar nucleosynthesis published so far, the scenario for the production of Cu in stars remains elusive. In particular, it is still debated whether copper originates mostly in massive stars or type Ia supernovae. To answer this question, we compute self-consistent chemical evolution models taking into account the results of updated stellar nucleosynthesis. By contra...

Radial velocities in the globular cluster ω Centauri

We have used the ARGUS multi–object spectrometer at the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope to obtain 2756 radial velocity measurements for 1966 individual stars in the globular cluster ω Centauri brighter than blue photographic magnitude of about 16.5. Of these, 1589 stars are cluster members. A comparison with two independent radial velocity studies, carried out by Suntzeff & Kraft and by Mayor et al., ...
